Reactions to Zoran Mamdani’s Mayoral Victory in New York City

Jewish organizations are voicing their concerns following Zoran Mamdani’s election as the new mayor of New York City, which is the largest city in the United States. His victory has stirred up significant reactions from various groups.

After Mamdani’s win in this high-stakes election, several organizations—including UJA New York Federation, JCRC New York, ADL New York/New Jersey, AJC New York, and the New York Board of Rabbis—released a joint statement. They acknowledged that while many issues matter to voters, they believe Mamdani’s core values clash with those of the Jewish community. They stated, “New Yorkers have voiced their choice, and we must address the significant disconnect between the elected mayor’s beliefs and our community’s values.”

The groups urged Mamdani and other elected officials to lead with humility and respect for New York’s diverse perspectives. They stressed their commitment to holding all officials—including Mamdani—accountable for ensuring that Jewish life and support for Israel are safe and flourishing in the city.

Mamdani’s Background and Controversies

Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, highlighted the urgent need for safety amid rising anti-Semitism, especially in New York City. He mentioned launching a new initiative that includes a hotline for reporting anti-Semitic incidents and a monitoring program to observe Mamdani’s policies and appointments, indicating that the new mayor’s actions will be closely scrutinized.

A study conducted in 2023 revealed that nearly one million Jews reside in New York City, with Brooklyn hosting the highest number. Given the significant Jewish population, any perceived threats or concerns are taken very seriously. Mamdani, who has faced backlash for his position on Israel, previously refused to condemn certain controversial phrases and actions that many in the Jewish community view as inflammatory.

Following his win, Israeli Minister Amichai Chikli remarked on how surprising it is that a historically significant Jewish city has elected someone perceived as supportive of Hamas. Chikli expressed concern that New York may no longer feel like a home for its Jewish residents.

Criticism and Challenges Ahead

The Global Institute for Anti-Semitism Policy issued a report before the election raising alarms about Mamdani’s history and ideologies. Concerns centered around his ambiguous stance on anti-Israel rhetoric and failure to condemn violent associations with terms like “globalization of the intifada.”

Multiple Jewish leaders, including AJC CEO Ted Deutch, expressed discontent with Mamdani’s refusal to denounce anti-Semitic slogans and his description of Israel’s military actions as “genocide.” They emphasized that such rhetoric not only misrepresents facts but also fuels extremist sentiments.

Amidst this backlash, Mamdani stated his commitment to protecting Jewish citizens. He expressed his pain over being labeled an anti-Semite and emphasized his ongoing support for the Jewish community. During Yom Kippur, he made a statement promising to safeguard Jewish New Yorkers, especially after a recent synagogue attack in the UK.

As Mamdani steps into his new role, it seems clear that he’ll need to navigate a complex landscape of expectations and concerns from various communities. His leadership will likely be tested as these issues unfold in the coming months.
