Jewish students attacked with glass bottle on University of Pittsburgh campus as students return to classes

A group of Jewish students at the University of Pittsburgh was attacked with a glass bottle, injuring two students, the university announced.

According to In the statement The University of Pennsylvania students were attacked around 11:30pm on Friday near the Cathedral of Learning, the heart of the Pittsburgh campus.

Two students were injured in the attack, including one who was wearing a yarmulke, a traditional Jewish headwear, and were treated at the scene, the university said.

The university said the suspect has no affiliation to the university and was quickly arrested by Pitt University Police.

The suspect was wearing a kaffiyeh, a traditional checked scarf worn in the Middle East that has become an increasingly visible symbol of solidarity with the Palestinians.

University leaders have been in contact with the Hillel University Center and the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh.

The university condemned the attack as “horrific.”

“To be clear, neither violence nor anti-Semitism will be tolerated,” the statement said. “Our local and federal partners are assisting Pitt Police in this ongoing investigation.”

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said “anti-Semitism and hate-motivated violence of any kind have no place in our communities.”

“No matter what you look like, where you come from, who you pray for or don't pray for, you have a right to feel safe here on Penn's campus,” Shapiro said. Anti-Semitism has been on the rise in the United States since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, in which terrorists invaded Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking more than 240 hostages.
