Jewish Synagogue Fire Bombed in German City of Oldenburg

BERLIN (AP) – An incendiary bomb was thrown into the door of a synagogue in northwestern Germany on Friday, but the damage was minor, police said. There were no injuries.

The incident in the city of Oldenburg occurred early Friday afternoon. The fire was discovered quickly, did not spread, and did not require firefighters to extinguish it. No events were being held in the building at the time.

Police said they were investigating the suspect but had no information on a motive.

Police chief Andreas Sagehorn condemned the “despicable act” and said in a statement that “we will immediately strengthen security measures at the Oldenburg synagogue on the basis of this attack” while an investigation is ongoing.

Germany has seen a significant increase in anti-Semitic incidents following October’s Hamas attack on Israel and subsequent Israeli attack on Gaza.
