Subpoena Issued to Former Biden Adviser in Oversight Investigation
James Kommer, R-KY and Chair of the House Committee on Surveillance and Government Reform, has issued a subpoena to Anthony Vernal, who previously served as a senior adviser to Jill Biden. This subpoena follows Vernal’s deposition on July 16.
The investigation focuses on concerns regarding former President Joe Biden’s mental health and allegations surrounding potential cover-ups of unauthorized actions. Vernal had initially agreed to a voluntary transcription interview but ultimately declined after being informed by a White House lawyer that he had waived enforcement privileges related to the investigation.
In a letter accompanying the subpoena, Comer mentioned the close ties between former President Biden and Jill Biden. He expressed the committee’s interest in understanding whether Vernal had been involved in efforts to conceal the former president’s capacity to serve from the public. “Your testimony is crucial… to aid the committee’s oversight duties,” Comer stated.
Who is Anthony Vernal?
Vernal is one of several former senior aides who claimed he witnessed President Biden’s condition and his functioning within the White House. The committee has previously summoned Biden’s doctor, Kevin O’Connor, and recently closed a deposition on July 9. Another former aide, Neera Tanden, has agreed to testify voluntarily, although she arrived five hours late.
Seeking Testimony from More Aides
Tanden, who once directed Biden’s National Policy Council, reported that while she could oversee signatures, she was unaware of who had provided final approvals within the president’s inner circle. She, like others, denies any cover-up regarding Biden’s mental state.
Additionally, the committee is pursuing testimony from other former aides, Annie Tomasini and Ashley Williams, who have agreed to testify next month. Comer emphasized the necessity for these individuals to explain the true state of President Biden’s recognition and decision-making process.
Trump’s Investigation of Biden’s Actions
In a related context, former President Trump has called for an investigation into Biden’s actions, asserting that Biden’s aides have overshadowed concerns regarding his “cognitive decline.” Biden responded with clarity, stating that he has made various decisions during his presidency, from pardons to executive orders.
Trump described the situation as one of the most significant scandals in American history, claiming the American people were kept in the dark about who initiated enforcement actions tied to Biden’s decisions. He pointed out that Biden’s signature appears on numerous documents, which has led to significant policy changes.
