Jillian Michaels Responds to “The Greatest Loser” Documentary

Jillian Michaels has shared her thoughts on Netflix’s documentary, “The Greatest Loser,” which has stirred up some controversy. Interestingly, Michaels didn’t participate in this three-part series, where she was depicted somewhat unfavorably. The documentary portrays her as being tough on contestants, including claims about her distributing caffeine pills to encourage rapid weight loss and pushing contestants to their limits.

In a recent interview, Michaels discussed the possibility of taking legal action against her former co-trainer Bob Harper or the show’s doctor, Dr. Robert Huizenga, calling the documentary a “bad lie.” She expressed that while there are many battles worth fighting, choosing the right one is essential. “You can’t take on ten Goliaths at once,” she noted.

Michaels, who served as a coach for the Red Team on “The Greatest Loser” for about ten years, officially left in 2014. She did admit that she had been in talks with the show’s executive producer about the documentary and is considering a different avenue rather than legal action, citing the high costs associated with lawsuits.

According to her, the original producers of the show were upset by the documentary’s misrepresentations. “They are literally just lying,” Michaels stated. She mentioned conversations with contestants from season one who claimed the series made her out to be a billionaire because of their wins, which she found amusing given that she wasn’t directly involved in their training.

Regarding a claim of a contestant experiencing medical issues, Dr. Huizenga commented that such occurrences are not uncommon in rigorous exercise and shouldn’t be deemed a reason for disqualification. He clarified that there were policies in place regarding dehydration during the show.

Interestingly, when asked about rebooting “The Greatest Loser,” Michaels was quick to dismiss the idea, expressing her focus is now elsewhere. “I’m trying to bring change with big food and big pharma… I’m diving into a different ring,” she explained.

Reflecting on her time on “The Greatest Loser,” Michaels acknowledged that while there were challenges and mistakes, many were not within her control. She mentioned that certain decisions—like the handling of food—were particularly troubling to her during the show.

The documentary has also highlighted Rachel Fredrickson, a contestant known for significant weight loss, and suggested that Michaels had encouraged her with caffeine pills. Michaels clarified, “I didn’t train Rachel Fredrickson at all. If caffeine were such a magical weight-loss solution, we’d see it everywhere.” She expressed concern over Fredrickson’s extraordinary weight loss at the finale, indicating it raised red flags for her.

Ultimately, Michaels remains unapologetic about her decision not to engage with the documentary. She firmly stated, “Zero regrets not doing that because I simply lent credibility to something that’s a terrible lie.” As of now, neither Netflix nor Harper has released a statement regarding her comments.
