Consumer Staples as a Safe Haven for Investors

Investors searching for alternatives to the faltering artificial intelligence sector might want to shift their attention toward consumer staples stocks, according to CNBC’s Jim Cramer.

The Nasdaq-100, which reflects the performance of major tech companies, saw a nearly 7% decline in October. As a result, investors have begun to explore more stable sectors. In contrast, the S&P 500 Equal Weight index—where each stock is treated equally regardless of market capitalization—rose about 5% for the month. The consumer staples index performed particularly well, jumping 11.4%, making it the second-best sector performance after energy.

“You’ve got to adapt to what the market is offering, and until the tech sector’s problems are resolved, other areas could be more promising,” Cramer expressed. “I think it might be wise to spend some time in the staples sector.”

Cramer cited four consumer staples companies that he believes are especially appealing. These firms are well-known for their household brands, which typically see steady demand regardless of economic conditions.

  1. Kimberly-Clark: This company, famous for products like Kleenex and Huggies, is a recent addition to Cramer’s Charitable Trust portfolio. He anticipates significant growth from its impending merger with Kenvue, known for brands like Tylenol and Band-Aid. Cramer thinks the partnership will enhance efficiency and form a major player in consumer goods. Kimberly-Clark shares went up nearly 11% in October but still trade at under 15 times earnings, along with a 4.7% dividend yield. “I think this move is just beginning,” Cramer remarked.
  2. Procter & Gamble: Although the Investing Club sold its long-held position in P&G back in July, Cramer views the company as a solid defensive investment after its recent stronger-than-expected quarterly results. He also expressed optimism for the new CEO, Shailesh Jejurikar. P&G stock rose 11% in October, but Cramer leans towards Kimberly-Clark for its more attractive valuation and higher dividend yield.
  3. Constellation Brands: The producer of Modelo and Pacifico beers seems to be on the rebound. Its beer business is gaining market share, while its wine and spirits segment reported a 15% increase in shipments last quarter. Shares surged 20% in October. Nevertheless, Cramer still considers the stock a value choice, trading at about 11 times earnings and yielding over 3%. “It appears that the worst may be over for Constellation Brands,” he noted.
  4. Coca-Cola: Among leading soda manufacturers, Cramer prefers Coca-Cola. The company revealed a robust quarterly performance, driven by higher sales volume rather than just price hikes. He lauded its innovations in zero-calorie beverages and its Fairlife milk brand, which offers protein options. Coca-Cola shares gained 9% in October.

In a market characterized by uncertainty, focusing on consumer staples could provide a more stable investment avenue while the tech sector navigates its challenges.
