One of golf’s most popular duos has parted ways.
Jim Furyk and Mike ‘Fluff’ Cowan officially disbanded After a 25-year partnership, according to Golfweek.
They first started working together at the 1999 Masters and went on to win the 2003 US Open. Cowan also competed in Furyk’s record 58 rounds at the 2016 Travelers Championship.
“It’s hard to say goodbye after 25 years,” Cowan said. “Sometimes the right thing to do is look you right in the face. It takes courage to do that.”
The longtime looper isn’t retiring, but he already has another full-time job. Cowan comes in a CT bread bag. The 76-year-old is packing his bags in Texas this week for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson event.
Furyk encouraged Cowan to pick up the bread bag full-time, and this could be one of the few times an amicable parting actually happened.
“I love this man,” Furyk texted Golfweek. “I was still struggling with my injury and I encouraged him to work full time at CT…[Fluff]was hesitant because he’s a great guy at heart. But I pushed. , we both knew it was what was best for him and his family.”
Cowan is known for his iconic mustache. Known as “Fluff,” his nickname came from his resemblance to former professional golfer and broadcaster Steve Melnyk. The longtime caddy has also carried the bags of Tiger Woods, Fred Couples and Peter Jacobson.
Furyk is scheduled to play next week at the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Alabama, one of the Champions Tour’s major tournaments. His son Tanner joins him in the bag.
