Jesse Minter will not remain with the Michigan Wolverines next season.
He will join Jim Harbaugh in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Chargers announced Tuesday that they have hired Minter as their new defensive coordinator, the same role he held the past two seasons at Michigan under Harbaugh.
“I have nothing but love for everyone at the University of Michigan, especially the players. We have had an amazing journey together,” Minter wrote on X, confirming his departure.

Minter’s defense was formidable and helped the University of Michigan win the national title. His Wolverines defense was the top-ranked group in the country in 2023.
The 40-year-old has deep ties to the Harbaugh family. Minter previously worked under John Harbaugh as an assistant with the Baltimore Ravens from 2017 to 2020. He was promoted to defensive backs coach in his final season and then became Vanderbilt’s defensive coordinator.

Minter also served as Georgia State’s defensive coordinator from 2013 to 2016, and was nominated for the Broyles Award, given to college football’s top assistant coach, in 2015. He is also a finalist for the award in 2022.
Minter has also coached at Indiana State University, the University of Cincinnati and the University of Notre Dame, and began his college coaching career as a defensive intern in 2006.

Minter isn’t the only Michigan coach to join Jim Harbaugh in Los Angeles. According to ESPN, the Chargers will reportedly hire Wolverines defensive line coach Mike Elston in the same role as the Chargers next season.
ESPN added that other assistants are expected to join him, including strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert.
That means new Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore, Harbaugh University’s offensive coordinator, will have a lot to wear in her first season leading the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

Minter will now focus on rebuilding a defense that struggled despite its star power in the tough AFC West last season.
