Harbaugh Brothers: A Family Connection in Coaching

Jim Harbaugh has expressed a desire to stay close to his brother John, who is currently without a coaching position.

Despite that, the Chargers’ head coach holds a firm stance: even if John’s next opportunity arises, they should avoid joining the AFC.

During a press conference on Wednesday, following John’s dismissal after 18 years leading the Ravens, Jim referred to John as “the best.”

“John Harbaugh is the best coach I know, the best coach I’ve ever seen,” Jim stated. He added, “Whatever team he goes to is going to be a tough team, and I just hope it’s in the NFC.”

John’s firing now positions him as a likely candidate for various coaching roles, reshaping the coaching landscape. A former Super Bowl champion (notably defeating Jim’s 49ers in 2013), he boasts a coaching record of 180-113 and has led the Ravens to six AFC North titles. This season ended with a disappointing 8-9 record, as they narrowly missed the playoffs due to a last-second field goal in Week 18.

Jim remains optimistic about his brother’s future employment. “He’s going to be the head coach next year,” he asserted. “We’re going to play against him one way or another.”

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport speculated that John might find the Raiders less appealing given he would face Jim twice a season. Interestingly, John has a perfect record against Jim in their three matchups.

Among the teams interested in hiring John is the Giants, as confirmed by the Post’s Paul Schwartz. However, general manager Joe Schoen mentioned the team would consider a wide range of candidates to replace Brian Daboll.

The Giants plan to interview several candidates, including former Packers and Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, in addition to John Harbaugh.

Interestingly, the Giants are not alone; nine teams have reportedly shown interest in John’s coaching services.

Meanwhile, Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers are set to face the Patriots Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, with quarterback Justin Herbert eager for his first playoff win.
