Jim Irsay’s Iconic Sports Memorabilia Auction
Jim Irsay, the former owner of the Indianapolis Colts, amassed an impressive collection of sports memorabilia throughout his life. Recently, his collection was auctioned off by Christie’s, the renowned auction house, in a live online event. Over the course of just three days, the auction generated more than $93 million, significantly surpassing the initial estimate of $40 million.
The auction featured numerous standout pieces, including the saddle worn during Secretariat’s 1973 Triple Crown victory, a jersey worn by Wayne Gretzky when he scored his 500th NHL goal, and one of Jackie Robinson’s bats from 1953. These items stirred considerable excitement among collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The Secretariat saddle ended up fetching $1,524,000, making it the most expensive piece of horse racing equipment ever sold. Gretzky’s jersey garnered $952,500, while Robinson’s bat sold for an impressive $406,400.
Julien Pradels, the president of Christie’s Americas, expressed that the auction was a testament to Irsay’s remarkable eye for collecting. He described the items as “iconic objects that speak to our culture and our time.” Though Irsay’s collection was one of a kind, he suggested that Christie’s would continue to host exceptional auctions in the future.
During the event, 23 world records were set, including a Pink Floyd guitar that achieved the highest price ever for a guitar sold at auction. This particular instrument was notably played by David Gilmour across several of the band’s albums.
Christie’s announced that part of the proceeds from Irsay’s collection would benefit charities he supported throughout his life. Furthermore, the FBI has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Irsay’s passing, particularly regarding his relationship with Dr. Harry Harutunian, a specialist in addiction who allegedly prescribed him various medications.
