Jimmie Johnson thanks supporters after in-laws’ murder-suicide

NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson made his first public comment this week about the tragedy that struck his family last summer.

Johnson's in-laws and nephew were found dead in their Oklahoma home last June in an apparent murder-suicide, shocking the family.

The seven-time NASCAR champion hasn't said anything about the event since his July 2023 Instagram post, but he broke his silence. When appearing on “Today”.

“First and foremost, I want to thank you for your support,” Johnson said. “Our friends, family and fans around the world have been incredibly supportive and have helped us get through this incredibly difficult time. We are doing the best we can and all you can do is That’s what it’s all about, so thank you for your support and continued support.”

Mr. Johnson's in-laws, Jack and Terry Janway, parents of the NASCAR star's wife, Chandra Janway, were found dead in their Muskogee home on the night of June 26.

Mr Johnson's 11-year-old nephew, Dalton Jianwei, was also found dead in the home.

Police believe Terry shot Jack and Dalton before turning the gun on himself.

Johnson missed the first Chicago Street Race, which would have been the fourth NASCAR Cup Series race of the 2023 season.

The legendary driver remained silent about the tragedy until he released a statement on July 28, a little more than a month after the incident.

“Our family is devastated by the loss of our loved one. [Terry] Lynn, Jack and Dalton Jianwei,” Johnson wrote. “During this incredibly sad time, we are humbled by the outpouring of love and support and remain grateful for everyone's compassion.”

Johnson will be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame later this week, and despite his retirement, he still continues to race in limited capacity.

He is scheduled to participate in nine races this season, including the Daytona 500.
