Jimmy Carter’s Funeral Procession Begins In Georgia

Funeral services for former President Jimmy Carter have begun in Georgia. 39th The president lived to be 100 years old.

Saturday began the first day of a six-day funeral in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. His flag-draped casket left Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus and was carried in a motorcade through the Plains en route to Atlanta, Georgia.

Mr. Carter's former Secret Service agents have been terminated from their positions as casket carriers for the late president.

In Atlanta, Carter's casket will stop at the state Capitol. The ceremony will be held at the Carter Center. His body will lie in state at the state Capitol until Tuesday. The public can view former presidents. The late president and his family will then travel to Washington, D.C.

After Mr. Carter arrives at Joint Base Andrews, his motorcade will head to the U.S. Navy Memorial in the nation's capital and deliver a horse-drawn caisson to the U.S. Capitol. He will rest abroad until Thursday.

President Joe Biden declared Thursday a national day of mourning. Carter's funeral will be held the same day at the Washington National Cathedral.

Many celebrities are scheduled to attend the 39th anniversary ceremonyth President's funeral. President-elect Donald J. Trump announced at a New Year's Eve party that he would attend the funeral. Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy.

After a funeral in Washington, D.C., Carter's body will be returned to the Peach State. A private funeral will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains.

Mr. Carter is the oldest living president. He was born on October 1, 1924.

Before being elected president, Mr. Carter served as governor of Georgia.

After the Watergate scandal, Democrat Carter defeated Republican President Gerald Ford and was elected president in 1976. Carter was unable to end the 444-day Iran hostage crisis, which prevented him from running for re-election in 1980. He served one term before losing to Ronald Reagan.

Carter has been in hospice care since February 2023.
