Gomez Advances in Los Angeles Race Amid Personal Scandal

Democratic Representative Jimmy Gomez is set for a runoff in the Los Angeles congressional race, following his admission of infidelity. This revelation came to light on Tuesday.

As of Wednesday afternoon, with about 60% of the votes counted, Gomez had garnered nearly 46% support, positioning him well for the November general election for the incumbent’s 34th Congressional District seat.

Currently, five other candidates are competing for the second spot to join him in the runoff, with Democrat Angela Gonzalez Torres standing in second place, holding over 25% of the vote.

Gomez, who started the Congressional Dads Caucus, acknowledged on Tuesday that he cheated on his wife. This followed a report from April where he was spotted kissing a congressional aide at a social event in Washington, D.C.

“Years ago, I made a personal mistake outside of my marriage that caused great pain to my wife and family,” he shared with CNN, clarifying that the relationship was consensual.

“I sincerely apologize to my wife, family, friends, and those I serve,” he added.

At 51, Gomez is reportedly under investigation by the House Ethics Committee regarding allegations of sexual misconduct. The inquiry was initiated after media coverage highlighted the reported incidents.

In April, during a tumultuous time in former Rep. Eric Swalwell’s California gubernatorial campaign, it was reported that Gomez had been seen kissing the younger aide amidst ongoing sexual misconduct discussions.

Gomez, a married member of Swalwell’s “Cool Kids Clique,” was also noted for flirting with another House Democrat’s aide at a party hosted by Swalwell to celebrate the start of the legislative break in August.

A spokesperson initially dismissed the kissing claims as “untrue,” stating that the encounter “never took place.” However, after Gomez’s admission of his infidelity, they did not provide a response when questioned again.

Despite the ongoing turmoil, Gomez has expressed no intention of stepping down. He maintained that while his actions were consensual and did not violate any laws or ethical codes, the consequences have impacted those he values most. He mentioned that he is seeking “professional assistance” to address his conduct.

Democratic officials have criticized him, with one remarking, “This person is a sleaze bag. He should resign and use his free time to swap war stories with Mr. Swalwell.”

As the election draws closer, Gonzalez-Torres, backed by the left-leaning Justice Democrats and the California Working Families Party, may capitalize on this controversy. “Dear Angelenos, we deserve better,” she stated on X, emphasizing the need for genuine representation and respect in the community.
