Comedians Respond to Political Violence After Charlie Kirk’s Death

Late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert have spoken out against political violence following the tragic death of conservative figure Charlie Kirk. He was shot and killed on September 10 at an outdoor political event in Utah, an act that Governor Spencer Cox labeled a “political assassination.” While authorities have retrieved the weapon believed to be involved, the search for the perpetrator continues.

Kimmel shared his thoughts on social media, expressing condolences to Kirk’s family and friends, although he didn’t address the incident directly during the September 10 broadcast of Jimmy Kimmel Live. He remarked, “Can I just say that it’s a horrifying reality when shooting someone becomes an option instead of, well, just pointing an angry finger? Our thoughts go out to the Kirks and to all who have been affected by senseless gun violence.”

Meanwhile, Colbert opened his show that evening reflecting on Kirk’s death, sharing that he had learned of the news just before the broadcast. He emphasized the mustiness of political violence, saying, “I remember the political violence from the ’60s, and I sincerely hope everyone sees that violence won’t solve anything. It just creates a vicious cycle.” As he wrapped up, Colbert expressed a hope that this incident was merely the act of a deranged individual and not indicative of a larger trend.

Kirk was a well-known conservative activist and helped co-found Turning Point USA, a non-profit organization aimed at promoting conservative values among youth. He was also a vocal supporter of President Trump.

In a statement, Trump praised Kirk, calling him the “heart of the youth of America” and a “martyr for truth and freedom.” He condemned the act as a “vicious assassination” during a remembrance event for 9/11 victims. Additionally, Trump announced that Kirk would posthumously receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of his contributions.
