Kimmel Critiques New DHS Secretary Mullin in Monologue
During a recent monologue, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel targeted newly confirmed Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin, characterizing him as an “unqualified” plumber. His remarks drew attention and sparked conversation among viewers.
Kimmel humorously introduced Mullin, joking, “Mr. Trump seems to have fostered a whole new class of thinkers, including Mark Wayne ‘Chuck Mike Bruce Dave’ Mellon.” He noted Mullin’s previous careers as a junior mixed martial artist and a plumber, quipping, “So, now we rely on plumbers to defend us against terrorism. It worked for Mario, so why not?”
He further criticized the selection of unqualified appointees by Trump, suggesting as a joke, “If we’re going to keep this trend, why not have someone like Lil Wayne in the role? At least we could have a concert.” The comments, while meant to be humorous, received backlash.
Many commentators on social media felt Kimmel’s remarks were elitist, pointing out his derision of working-class jobs. Senator Cynthia Lummis from Wyoming remarked, “It’s disgraceful how Hollywood elites dismiss working-class individuals.” Senator Ted Cruz jokingly stated he would prefer to be a plumber over an unfunny comedian.
Journalists and commentators expressed their opinions, with some emphasizing the importance of blue-collar work. Rep. Mike Collins from Georgia noted that it’s essential to recognize the value of trades and the people who operate them, stating, “These jobs are the backbone of our economy.” He criticized the way some in Hollywood belittle such professions as if being a plumber is less dignified than entertaining on late-night TV.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) responded to the critique, highlighting their commitment to serious matters, stating, “We’re focused on apprehending criminals, not engaging in this kind of frivolity.” Mullin was sworn in as the ninth DHS secretary, having been confirmed by the Senate recently with some Republican support.
Former Secretary Kristi Noem was replaced after being let go earlier this month. The ongoing conversations surrounding Kimmel’s comments hint at a broader discussion about perceptions of labor and expertise in today’s society.
