Jimmy Kimmel’s Show Suspended Following Controversial Comments
On Wednesday, it was announced that Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show will be on “indefinite hiatus” due to remarks he made about the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
During his monologues on Monday and Tuesday, Kimmel criticized conservatives for their reactions to Kirk’s death. He specifically accused some supporters of politicizing the tragedy and trying to deflect blame. He also shared his thoughts on the responses from figures like President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, suggesting that Trump’s feelings seemed childlike and voicing doubts about the FBI’s investigation.
“The weekend showed some new lows, especially from the MAGA crowd, who are trying to frame Kirk’s death as anything but a reflection of their own agenda,” Kimmel said. “Honestly, it felt like there was a bizarre sadness in the mix of my points.”
Following Kimmel’s statements, a spokesperson for ABC confirmed the indefinite suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Prior to this announcement, the local TV affiliate Nexstar indicated that the show would not be aired “for the foreseeable future.” Nexstar, which operates the largest group of local television stations in the U.S., also owns the CW network and other multicast affiliates.
Nexstar expressed strong disapproval of Kimmel’s recent comments about Kirk’s murder, stating that they will replace the show with alternative programming to better serve their audience.
“Kimmel’s remarks regarding Kirk’s death are not only insensitive but come at a time when our national political discourse needs more civility. We believe a broadcasting platform for Kimmel at this moment isn’t in the public interest,” they said.
Moreover, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Kerr criticized Kimmel’s comments as “the most egregious act imaginable.” He suggested that networks either take corrective actions regarding Kimmel’s behavior or face further consequences from the FCC.
“We can handle this easily or complicate matters further,” Kerr remarked. “It’s up to these companies to rectify their approach, or we may need to step in more seriously.”
In addition, the American Center for Rights, a public interest law firm, has lodged a complaint against Kimmel. They argue that being a late-night comedian doesn’t exempt him from accountability for his words.
“Daniel Sua, the president of the American Rights Center, stated, ‘Business owners must take action to address this issue directly.’
