Jimmy Kimmel's wife shares her experience of losing family connections due to Trump votes

Jimmy Kimmel’s Wife Talks Family Rift Over Politics

Molly McNerney, TV writer and wife of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, recently opened up on the podcast “We Can Do Hard Things” about the strain political differences have placed on her family. She indicated that certain relatives, who supported Trump, are no longer in contact with her.

This revelation came after a public feud between Kimmel and President Trump last September concerning the suspension of his show. McNerney expressed feeling betrayed, stating that having family members vote for Trump felt like a rejection of her husband and their shared values.

Disney temporarily halted production of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after Kimmel’s controversial remarks related to a political situation, although he returned shortly after. McNerney remarked that her struggle with these family dynamics goes beyond mere party loyalty; for her, it’s about foundational family values.

“I’m deeply hurt by the state of my personal relationships,” she admitted. “Voting for Trump feels like not supporting my husband and our family. It’s really hard to cope with losing family connections over this.” She further elaborated that the politics she sees today clash with the Christian principles she was raised on, especially regarding compassion and care for those in need.

McNerney noted that she feels perpetually conflicted and angry. This leads her to direct her frustrations at family members, especially as the political landscape evolves. She also voiced a desire to “deprogram” herself from these emotions and shared that before the 2024 election, she reached out to her conservative relatives in hopes of swaying their votes.

In recounting her efforts, she noted how her emails outlining reasons to oppose Trump’s candidacy were largely ignored or met with extreme reactions. “It’s definitely created a lot of tension,” she reflected. While some family ties have been severed, she found that those who share her views have brought her closer to each other.

McNerney has come to realize that this conflict is personal, saying, “It’s not just politics to me; it’s about values.” Despite her upbringing in a Republican-leaning background, which fostered some empathy for her conservative relatives, she expressed sadness over the rifts created by their political beliefs.

“I really feel for those who are misinformed and believe it,” she said. The podcast offered a candid look at McNerney’s internal struggles and the complexity of family relationships in a politically charged climate.
