Joann Ariola, new head of NYC Council’s GOP, reveals what she wants to tackle first

The new GOP Chief of City Council said he wants to become a “practical” leader while growing Republican presence in New York after a spectacular ascension on Friday.

“I want this to be a working office. I want to be an office that operates at all levels, from federal government to city government,” she said.

“Even on the democratic side, I want to continue working with all my colleagues, and having that relationship is very important.

The longtime Queens civic leader won the Republican primary in June 2021 with over 80% votes and was elected to the city council in November with a margin of over 65%.

She tried her second term in 2023.
