The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose significantly last week, with claims increasing by 33,000 to 258,000 for the week ending Oct. 5, the Labor Department said Thursday. .

This is the highest number of new applications since early August and suggests the labor market may be softening. It is possible that the number of applications has increased as a result of Hurricane Helen.

Economists had expected a more modest increase of 5,000, with new claims expected to be just 230,000.

The four-week moving average, which smooths out weekly fluctuations, rose by 6,750 cases to 231,000. Meanwhile, the number of Americans continuing to receive unemployment benefits rose by 42,000 to 1.86 million in the week ending September 28, highlighting the continued rise in the unemployment rate.
