Reports on Monday said the young girl, Jocelyn Nangaray, was sexually assaulted, murdered and her body dumped in a Houston bayou by two illegal immigrants.
Jocelyn, 12, was strangled after a two-hour assault and was found naked from the waist down and with her hands tied behind her back on June 17.
The Houston Forensic Science Center confirmed that Jocelyn was sexually assaulted during the attack. KTRK reported on monday.
The results were sent to the district attorney’s office, the station reported.
According to court documents, Franklin Jose Peña Ramos, 26, and Johan Jose Rangel Martinez, 21, are charged with murder after they allegedly lured Jocelyn onto the bridge and brutally killed her.
Both men had crossed the southern border into the US illegally in recent months and were released by federal immigration authorities.
The district attorney’s office was awaiting the results of a sexual assault test to determine whether Jocelyn’s case merited the death penalty.
If the test had not been positive, the charge would not have carried the death penalty because Texas law limits it to victims of Jocelyn’s age.
