Joel Embiid, the Knicks' rival, triumphs in his return to Madison Square Garden

Embiid Shines in 76ers’ Win Over Knicks

Joel Embiid is a towering figure, both literally and figuratively. Standing 7 feet tall and weighing 300 pounds, he’s a force on the court, reminiscent of a blend between Wilt Chamberlain and Ivan Drago. His presence alone can ignite tension, especially when facing teams like the Knicks.

When the 76ers and Knicks faced off in the 2024 playoffs, Embiid, the reigning MVP, almost single-handedly sparked a long-dormant rivalry. He scored an impressive 50 points and ruffled feathers with provocative plays, inciting boisterous reactions from the Madison Square Garden crowd. The series was an exhilarating setup for a feud New York fans had long been yearning for.

Fast forward to Saturday night, and Embiid was back at the Garden, putting on a show with 26 points (hitting 9 of 15 shots), ten rebounds, and five assists, helping the 76ers secure a 130-119 victory over the Knicks.

“This place holds a special spot in my heart. I just love it here,” Embiid remarked. He noted how quiet the fans were during the game, perhaps not surprising given the score. “It’s nice to have that interaction. I suppose sometimes it’s better to be loved, and other times, it’s more entertaining to be the villain.”

Even with players like Tyrese Maxey and rookie V.J. Edgecomb contributing a combined 62 points, the crowd’s ire was predominantly directed at Embiid. He faced boos with every possession and audible frustration as Knicks players suffered fouls.

After struggling with injuries in recent seasons, Embiid is back to showcasing his remarkable skills. He’s dominating games from the high post, effortlessly navigating around defenders and facilitating plays for his teammates more effectively than ever before.

In the early part of the season, Embiid had averaged just 18.2 points and 5.6 rebounds over the first nine games. However, over the last six games leading up to Saturday, he turned it around, averaging 29.2 points and showing improved shooting stats.

He’s also been logging significant minutes; at least 30 in eight consecutive games, contributing to the 76ers’ three-win streak. It’s worth noting he had been limited to 58 games the previous two seasons and missed a chunk of games, including a matchup against the Knicks earlier this season.

In the final moments of the game, Embiid registered his first dunk of the season, a moment that sent him sprinting down the court, arms raised jubilantly, looking almost childlike in his excitement.

“It might be an easy way to score, but hey, it’s good to see he still has it,” said 76ers coach Nick Nurse, clearly pleased.

For Embiid, this victory was more than just numbers; it signaled that the rivalry is alive and well. “Playing against a strong team is always refreshing. Some might see them as favorites in the East this year. We held our own,” he reflected.
