Joey Chestnut is making a comeback.
The competitive eating champion is set to participate in this year’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island on July 4th. He missed last year’s event due to a disagreement over a sponsorship deal he had with another hot dog brand.
The announcement from Major League Meals and Chestnut came on Monday, just days after negotiations aimed at securing one of the sport’s biggest stars for this iconic event.
Chestnut expressed his enthusiasm on social media, stating, “I’m excited to return to Nathan’s Famous July Hot Dog Eating Contest. This event means the world to me. It’s a celebration of cherished traditions, American culture, and a significant part of my life.”
Last year, he was barred from participating over a contract dispute involving Impossible Foods, which had introduced plant-based hot dogs.
However, the issues seem to have been resolved, as both parties now appear eager to collaborate.
Chestnut seemed relieved to move past the controversy, declaring, “We continue to partner with a variety of companies, including those in plant-based markets, but those relationships do not conflict with my love for hot dogs. To be clear: Nathan’s is the only hot dog company I have ever worked for.”
He added, “I respect the different viewpoints, but I’m thankful we found common ground. I can’t wait to be back on the Coney Island stage, doing what I love, and celebrating July 4th with a hot dog in hand!”
Major League Meals has also released a promotional video announcing Chestnut’s return to this annual tradition.
According to George Shea, Chair of Major League Meals, “Nathan’s Famous July Hot Dog Eating Contest serves as a symbol of freedom for our country and the rest of the world. We’re excited to see talented individuals compete on such a storied platform.”
This year, Chestnut aims to reclaim the title from last year’s winner, Patrick Bertoletti, who managed to eat 58 hot dogs and buns, marking the first time since 2015 that someone other than Chestnut took the crown.
Chestnut is looking to secure his 17th title in what could be another record-setting year.
