Joey Chestnut discusses his comeback to the Hot Dog Eating Contest following a short ban.

Joey Chestnut Set to Compete Despite Probation

Joey Chestnut, the renowned competitive eater, is gearing up for the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4th at Coney Island, even though he is currently on probation.

Chestnut entered a guilty plea for a misdemeanor battery charge on April 20 and was subsequently sentenced to 180 days of probation in Hamilton County, Indiana. However, he has received permission to travel outside the state, allowing him to participate in this highly anticipated event, which he has won an impressive 17 times, including last year. He had even petitioned to travel for the upcoming competition.

It’s a significant moment for him, as he’s known as one of the best speed eaters of all time. Recently, he faced allegations related to an incident where he reportedly slapped a man during a night out at a bar in Indiana around 2 a.m. on March 21. The individual involved later mentioned that he was intoxicated and didn’t recall the details of the interaction.

According to reports, the man stated he approached Chestnut and they shook hands before Chestnut allegedly slapped him. The court documents describe the event, indicating that Chestnut made contact with the man’s face, and noted that the situation escalated without provocation.

Chestnut’s lawyer has expressed that his client takes full responsibility for what he refers to as a misunderstanding. It appears the competitive eater is committed to moving past this incident.

Looking ahead, Chestnut aims to win his 18th title in 19 attempts. Interestingly, he missed the 2024 contest due to a sponsorship disagreement but has now reconciled with event organizers regarding sponsorship for the upcoming contest.

In his last outing, Chestnut devoured 70.5 hot dogs and buns within 10 minutes, showcasing his extraordinary ability. As he prepares for the July contest, he is likely to be a favorite among fans and spectators alike.
