“Splash” was directed by Glazer’s frequent collaborator Ron Howard and premiered in 1984, starring Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah, Eugene Levy and Candy. Hanks’ character, Allen, is secretly in love with Madison (Hannah), a woman who is a mermaid, and Candy plays Hanks’ on-screen brother.
Glaser said that Candy was “the most famous of them all” at the time, and that he only agreed to play the role if he was able to meet Glaser and see “if there was chemistry.” .
“We went to a Mexican restaurant across the street from Warner Bros., and he had a little rum and 17 bottles of Coke,” he recalled. “He would drink drink after drink and just get good and have fun, but he was never sloppy. He just kept drinking.”

“I think he went too far that night with Nicholson,” he added. “So he literally ran into the ball and the ball hit him in the head.”
In the scene Glaser mentioned, Candy and Hanks are playing racquetball while discussing a mysterious woman (Hannah, who happens to be a mermaid) that Hanks’ character recently met. Candy’s character, drinking beer in the scene, struggles to keep up and ends up taking a racquetball in the face, knocking her to the ground.

Eisen asks if the blow to the face is real, and Glazer admits it is.
