John Cena has named Zilla Fatu as the second entrant in the John Cena Classic, a wrestling showcase scheduled for next month.
Cena made a rare appearance on WWE’s developmental brand, NXT, on Wednesday to announce Fatu’s place in the event.
“This building, to me, means potential. And potential, to me, is opportunity—and it is opportunity season,” Cena said before revealing Fatu’s name.
Fatu, a third-generation wrestler, made his NXT debut earlier this year. He is the son of the late Umaga and the great-nephew of Afa and Sika, known as The Wild Samoans. Cena spoke about his own history with members of the Samoan wrestling family.
“I’m here tonight for you. Tonight is very important for me. I kind of feel like an honorary Samoan sometimes,” Cena said. He recalled facing Rikishi, The Rock and Roman Reigns, as well as his connection with the Usos and giving Solo Sikoa an opportunity. “I also absolutely loved your dad.”
“For real, your family has done so much for me. It is an honor tonight to give you an opportunity to debut in the John Cena Classic,” he added.
Fatu grew emotional as Cena spoke about his family.
“Thank you, John. You got me really, really emotional right now,” Fatu said. “I appreciate you and the relationship you had with my family—and I’m especially grateful that you’re giving me this opportunity.”
He also had a message for viewers ahead of the event, which takes place during “Monday Night Raw” on Dec. 14: “I’m coming for everything.”
Fatu and Cody Rhodes are the first two announced entrants in the John Cena Classic, which will be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World.
Cena revealed the event’s championship belt on Monday. WWE fans who sign up with Club WWE will be able to vote for the winner, regardless of the match result.
