John Cooper Calls for Action on Michael Tate Allegations

John Cooper, the lead vocalist of the Christian Rock Band Frying Pan, is voicing his concerns regarding serious allegations against former Newsboys frontman Michael Tate, including accusations of sexual assault. In a recent episode of his podcast, titled “Michael Tate, Christian Music, and the Gospels of No Other Views,” Cooper mentioned feeling compelled to address these claims after they emerged last month.

“I feel a burden from the Lord. He won’t let me rest,” Cooper explained. “I’m not thrilled about doing this, but I can’t shake it. I’ve seen how the Contemporary Christian Music scene seems overly focused on grace. Yes, we’re all sinners, but we have to start somewhere else. This isn’t the angle we should begin with.”

He emphasized the need to “clearly condemn” the actions in question, rather than condemning the individuals involved. “We shouldn’t discourage people, but we have to be firm against the behavior.”

Cooper, who also serves on the board of Ascent Church in Nashville, is advocating for those who have suffered from Tate’s alleged misconduct to be prioritized. He believes that how the community responds is crucial for their testimony to the wider world.

Cooper expressed frustration with the tendency within evangelical circles to minimize the gravity of such abuse in the name of grace and unity. “It’s not sufficient to just say we must be loving and forgive everyone instantly. Yes, we are all flawed, but some issues require immediate attention,” he noted.

Last month, Tate admitted to leading a “double life” and engaging in unwanted sexual advances toward men, alongside substance abuse that dates back to 2004. Following the allegations, three other men have come forward with similar accusations against the former DC Talk singer.

In January, Tate unexpectedly left the band, and last month, they were dropped by their record label, Capitol Christian Music Group. The band also canceled their Canadian tour, and their music has been removed from the K-Love Radio Network.

While Cooper praised Tate for his confession, he found it troubling that it only came after the allegations became public. “I’m glad Michael has shown some remorse. He wrote a thoughtful confession with no excuses. However, confessing only after the news broke feels off,” he reflected.

“Imagine if he had come forward much earlier—maybe it could have prevented some pain for others,” he suggested. “This situation makes the gospel seem less credible.”

Cooper stressed the importance of not overlooking potential injustices. “We can’t just ignore these serious accusations,” he insisted.

He also questioned the integrity of Christian artists, pondering whether their expressions of faith are genuine. “When our prominent musical figures lead such contradictory lives, it raises doubts,” he commented.

Cooper concluded with a somber note, saying, “It makes our faith feel less real.”
