Senator Cornyn Reflects on Loss in Texas Senate Runoff
Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn expressed a sense of melancholy following his defeat in the Texas Senate runoff elections, referencing both the Bible and Winston Churchill in his reflections.
Cornyn was beaten by Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton by a notable margin of 28 points. In a series of posts on X, he suggested that he had “fought a good fight” and emphasized that the end of his tenure didn’t signify a complete conclusion.
“This is not the end. It’s not the beginning of the end. But perhaps it’s the end of the beginning,” Cornyn mentioned in a statement shared on X.

Additionally, Cornyn shared an ancient fable involving a frog and a scorpion. In this story, the scorpion asks the frog to carry him across a river, despite the frog’s fears. The scorpion reassures the frog by arguing that stinging him would lead to their mutual demise. Nevertheless, halfway through, the scorpion stings the frog, and when questioned about his actions, replies, “I’m sorry, but I couldn’t help myself. That’s my nature.”

Previously, President Donald Trump endorsed Paxton on May 19, criticizing Cornyn on Truth Social for being “very dishonest” and for not effectively advancing his agenda. Cornyn had co-sponsored the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act with Republican Senator Mike Lee from Utah, yet the bill struggled to progress due to the 60-vote requirement to overcome the filibuster.
Trump urged Senate Republicans to use the filibuster to push the bill through. In March, Cornyn published an editorial in The New York Post arguing that the Democrats’ readiness to utilize procedural tactics to impede the SAVE America Act warranted alterations to Senate rules.
