John Cornyn Says He Doesn’t Recall Assisting in the Approval of Biden's Gun Control

On August 13, 2025, during a discussion about Texas gun rights, Senator John Cornyn (R) stated he couldn’t recall collaborating with Democrats on Joe Biden’s gun control measures.

In a post on X, Cornyn criticized Senate challenger Ken Paxton (R), suggesting he was “shooting with a blank.” He questioned if Paxton remembered his own partnership with Biden regarding the Gun Control Act.

Cornyn responded, “No,” implying that he remains focused on Texas gun rights.

CNN reported that Mitch McConnell specifically mentioned working with Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) to advance gun control measures, although specifics were not detailed.

McConnell commented:

I met with Senator Cornyn this morning. He returned home recently to reflect on the tragedy of this massacre. I urged him to connect with others who are also seeking results on this issue, including Senators Murphy and Sinema. We hope to find a bipartisan solution.

On June 25, 2022, Biden signed the Gun Control Act into law, with Cornyn playing a role in its development and receiving appreciation from Biden at a White House event shortly after.

Chris McNutt, Chairman of Texas Gun Rights, discussed his exchange with Cornyn, noting, “At 73, Cornyn seems to be increasingly forgetful about his policy alignment with Biden. Perhaps this is why he’s ignoring those troubling polls indicating that Paxton is surpassing him.” He added that Texas gun rights advocates would continue to remind Cornyn and others about his past actions.
