Texas Voters Head to Polls Amid Senate Runoff Tensions

As voters in Texas cast their ballots today, Republican Senator John Cornyn has issued a warning about the possibility of a significant upset for Democrats in a vital Senate race.

The primary showdown between Cornyn and his rival, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, culminates in today’s runoff election. Cornyn has expressed anxiety that the Republicans might lose ground, a scenario that could severely impact their chances of retaining a Senate majority.

In a chat with Fox News Digital before Election Day, Cornyn positioned Texas as “the most conservatively governed state in the country” and described it as a land of opportunity where the American dream thrives. However, he voiced concerns about how the runoff might unfold, suggesting that Paxton’s flaws and baggage could be weaponized by Democratic candidate James Talarico.

Facing Talarico, who many see as a rising Democratic star, is a challenge that Cornyn seems to take seriously. The potential for Talarico to sway voters has many in the Democratic Party hopeful that they might flip the state for the first time in over two decades.

Cornyn raised the issue of campaign finance, noting that Talarico had amassed an impressive $27 million in the first quarter of the year. He warned that if Paxton succeeds, it could open the floodgates for outside funding to pour into Texas.

He elaborated that it’s not just Senate races at play. “everything from down-ballot to local races are also affected,” he said, pointing out the stakes beyond just the top position.

“Since 1994, Texas has not elected a Democrat to statewide office,” he added. Even with Trump absent from the ballot, Cornyn believes he can secure a solid victory, not only for himself but also to aid his Republican colleagues.

Cornyn noted that he doesn’t think Paxton can carry the campaign well due to his controversial past, which could endanger their chances overall. Over the last decade, Paxton has faced numerous scandals and legal challenges, including an impeachment vote by the Texas House in 2023, although he was acquitted by the Senate.

It’s worth mentioning that Paxton is contending with personal issues, including contentious divorce proceedings that his wife has cited as being based on “biblical grounds.” Despite these challenges and Cornyn’s longstanding prominence in the party, it’s Paxton who enjoys the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.

Trump has publicly called Paxton a “true MAGA warrior” and expressed his disappointment with Cornyn for not supporting him during tough times.

Conversely, Cornyn affirmed his ties to Trump, stating that he has worked closely with the former president during both of his terms in office. Paxton, on the other hand, has been vocal against Cornyn’s approach, claiming that the senator has not been a strong Trump ally.

In response, Cornyn specified that his support for Trump is nearly unwavering at 99.3%. He emphasized the importance of giving Texans the power to make their own choices, suggesting they have a tendency to be independent-minded.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Talarico for his thoughts on the unfolding political battle.
