John Daly Sets New Record for Worst Single Hole Score

John Daly really outdid himself this time—seriously, he did.

The former major champion achieved a personal record for the worst score on a single hole during the first round of the Sanford International at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The 59-year-old Daly recorded a staggering 19 strokes on the par 5 12th hole on the Champions Tour, after already racking up four over par during his round on Friday.

Now, the 12th hole isn’t exactly a walk in the park. Players have to clear a lengthy stream that runs along the fairway. But, you know, it wasn’t just the water that got him this time.

His tee shot landed in the rough, and he followed it up by sending the ball out of bounds, hitting it an incredible seven times in succession. This included shots into the water and nearby forests.

Incredibly, he managed to finish the hole with just one more stroke after finally getting the ball on the green. He ended his round at 18 over par, which left him 24 strokes behind the second-day leader. Angel Cabrera is currently leading the tournament at 6 under par.

This isn’t the first time Daly has struggled with a high score on a hole; he previously set a record of 18 strokes on the sixth hole at the Bay Hill Invitational back in 1998.

Such scores are not entirely new territory for Daly. He had rounds of 14 and 13 strokes at the 18th hole during the 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach and the John Deere Classic in 2011 at TPC Deere Run.

Even so, his 19 strokes didn’t quite come close to the infamous mark in PGA Tour history. That record belongs to three-time major winner Tommy Armor, who needed a whopping 23 strokes to finish the 17th hole at the Shawnee Open in 1927, where he actually hit the ball 10 times in one attempt.
