John Deere Classic: How to watch, preview, tee times and more

The PGA Tour will host the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.

With six tournaments remaining, including the Olympics, before the FedEx Cup playoffs begin, players will be vying for points and a place in the top 70.

Those playing this week will need to score plenty of birdies to win as it will be the third consecutive birdie fest. In the tournament’s long history, winners have exceeded 20 under par scores many times, so expect fewer birdies.

Michael Kim won this tournament in 2018 with a score of 27 under par, the seventh-lowest score in PGA Tour history. He won that year by eight strokes.

The tournament has plenty of birdies, but also plenty of drama. Since John Deere took over sponsorship in 1999, the winner has been decided in extra holes six times, including Jordan Spieth’s victories in 2013 and 2015.

John Deere Classic Preview:

Defending champion Sepp Straka comes to the Quad Cities full of confidence. Last year, he won his second PGA Tour event after firing a 9-under 62 in the final round to win by two strokes. A former Georgia Bulldog, Straka finished tied for 23rd at the Travelers but also tied for fifth at the Charles Schwab Challenge and The Memorial. He’s in good form heading into back-to-back championships.

But two-time champion Jordan Spieth is also in the mix this week, looking to build on momentum from a place where he has performed well, though he hasn’t had his best performance this season and is in desperate need of a boost as the final stretch approaches.

Like Straka, Davis Thompson is coming into the tournament on a roll, having previously finished runner-up at the Myrtle Beach Classic and last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Thompson also had an impressive finish at the U.S. Open, where he tied for ninth, and could very well be the man to win his first tournament at TPC Deere Run.

Nick Dunlap, Neil Shipley, Joel Dahmen and Aaron Rye are all coming off strong results in the Rocket Mortgage Classic. This will be Dunlap and Shipley’s first time racing with John Deere, but their inexperience may not be an issue given their excellent form.

This week, many players are looking to finish in the top 70 to qualify for the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis and earn crucial FedEx Cup points.
