Davis Thompson became the 24th player to win his first PGA TOUR title at the John Deere Classic when he finished 28 under par to set the TPC Deere Run 72-hole scoring record.
In his last two tournaments, he tied for ninth at the U.S. Open and tied for second at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, where he shot a 7-under 64 in the final round to win by four strokes over C.T. Pang, Michael Thorbjornsen and amateur star Luke Clanton.
Thompson entered Sunday two strokes behind. The former Georgia Bulldog hit the gas from the opening tee and went on a furious spree, scoring five birdies and sinking putts of more than 120 feet in his first six holes.
The 25-year-old played superbly on the field, finishing +18 shots in total strokes gained.
Thompson took home $1.44 million in prize money and 500 FedEx Cup points from the $8 million prize pool, and improved from 51st to 22nd in the FedEx Cup Playoff standings.
Pan and Thorbjornsen each took home $712,000. Clanton, an amateur, received no prize money. Hayden Springer, aka Mr. 59, finished T7 and took home $252,500.
