At the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Jermy Hyndman, John Deere's chief technology officer, emphasized the company's focus on full autonomy. “When we talk about autonomy, we mean complete autonomy,” Hyndman said. “There's no one inside the machine.” This commitment to developing vehicles that can operate autonomously in the complex and unique environments farmers face every day is at the heart of John Deere's strategy.
The company's first autonomous tractor model is already being used by farmers across the country to prepare soil for next year's plantings. Building on this success, John Deere plans to expand its lineup of self-driving cars in the near future.
One of the major additions to the company's self-driving fleet is an articulated dump truck that can haul more than 92,000 pounds at a time. The vehicle is expected to significantly improve safety and productivity in quarries and other similar sites. The company emphasizes the truck's ability to make decisions and operate safely without supervision.
In addition to dump trucks, John Deere is developing unmanned tractors specifically designed to apply pesticides, growth regulators, and nutrients to nut orchards. These tractors are expected to be particularly beneficial to California's nut farming industry, which has suffered from labor shortages in recent years. Looking further ahead, John Deere has set an ambitious goal of selling fully autonomous corn and soybean farming systems by 2030.
Beyond the agricultural sector, John Deere is also entering the commercial landscaping market with autonomous lawn mowers. Willy Pell, CEO of Blue River Technology, believes this technology use case is well-suited for environments such as office parks and corporate campuses.
John Deere has been in the news for its plans to move its manufacturing plant to Mexico. Breitbart News previously reported that President Donald Trump has vowed to impose tariffs on Deere products if there is movement.
President Trump's pledge to protect American manufacturing jobs was echoed by farmers in Smithton, Pennsylvania, former acting National Security Director Rick Grenell, Republican Pennsylvania Senate candidate Dave McCormick, and former U.S. Rep. Lee. It was announced at a roundtable discussion with Zeldin (R-New York) and others.
“I just noticed there's a John Deere tractor in the background. I know a lot about John Deere. I love this company, but you know, a few days ago they closed down their manufacturing operations. “We've announced that we're going to move a lot of it to Mexico,” Trump said.
“I'm putting John Deere on notice right now. If you do that, we're going to impose a 200% tariff on everything you want to sell to the United States,” Trump said.
