Think of Denver Broncos quarterback Josh Allen.

John Elway said not selecting Allen in the 2018 NFL Draft may have been his biggest mistake as Broncos general manager.

“I was playing golf with Josh last year and I was like, ‘How long is it going to take him to realize that I passed him up and picked Bradley Chubb instead?’ And it took him two and a half holes,” Elway said in an interview with Barstool Sports. “Please excuse my opinion.” Podcast.

Allen has become one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks with the Buffalo Bills, while the Broncos have been in quarterback hell since Peyton Manning’s retirement.

“I liked him, but it just didn’t work out. He was my type. I think the biggest mistake I made as GM was not hiring Josh.”

They have started 13 different quarterbacks since “The Sheriff” left Denver.

Before selecting Allen, the roster included 2016 first-round draft pick Paxton Lynch and Case Keenum, who signed as a breakout free agent with the Minnesota Vikings.

Elway chose North Carolina’s Bradley Chubb fifth overall over a player from Wyoming, with Allen being selected just two spots later.

In five seasons with the Broncos, Chubb played in just 49 games and recorded 26 sacks.

The Broncos traded Chubb to the Miami Dolphins at the 2022 trade deadline in exchange for a 2023 first-round pick, a 2024 fourth-round pick and Chase Edmonds.

The Broncos acquired Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks in the 2022 offseason, hoping he would be their answer at quarterback, but after two years they released him due to underperformance.

In the last draft, the team selected Oregon State quarterback Bo Nix with the 12th overall pick, hoping he would be the answer to finding a franchise quarterback.

Elway compiled a 64-26 record in his first five seasons as general manager, including a win in Super Bowl L against the Carolina Panthers. Over his final five seasons, Elway was 32-48 before stepping down following the 2020 season.
