John Harbaugh Set to Join the Giants as Head Coach

The Giants are on the verge of making a significant acquisition. According to reports, John Harbaugh is expected to become their 24th head coach.

On Wednesday, the Giants hosted Harbaugh for a formal interview at their facility. They even took him to dinner before he returned to Baltimore, but they couldn’t finalize a deal just yet. By the evening, however, it appeared both teams were close to sealing what might be a historic decision for the franchise.

This move has been highly anticipated since Harbaugh was let go by the Ravens on January 6th after an impressive 18-year tenure. Almost immediately, he shot to the top of the wish list for teams seeking new head coaches, and the Giants have been particularly eager to secure his services.

Understanding the urgency, the Giants acted quickly, even competing with the Titans and Falcons, who were also eyeing Harbaugh. It seems they have convinced him not to pursue other interviews.

After a lengthy discussion, they took him to an early dinner at a local restaurant before he made his way back home. Reports suggest that Harbaugh’s camp was considering whether to keep him from interviewing with other teams, which ultimately might have played in the Giants’ favor.

This acquisition would mark a major achievement for the Giants’ organization. Contrary to some earlier beliefs, it appears Harbaugh is satisfied with the opportunity to collaborate with general manager Joe Schoen.

“It went well,” a source involved in the interview relayed.

It’s clear that Harbaugh was the prime candidate to replace Brian Daboll, who was dismissed after just 10 games last season, during which the Giants finished with a disappointing 3-14 record.

In their pursuit, the Giants even sent a private plane from co-owner Steve Tisch to bring Harbaugh from Baltimore. This continued a week-long effort to court him effectively.

Communications have been frequent between Schoen and Harbaugh’s team. Co-owner John Mara made a personal appeal, while Chris Mara, the senior personnel consultant, met with Harbaugh both in Baltimore and at his home. Influential figures like Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning also spoke highly of the organization, which likely helped sway Harbaugh’s decision.

During his visit with the Giants, Harbaugh had the opportunity to meet promising rookie quarterback Jackson Dart, whose potential is seen as a significant asset for the team.

Harbaugh, at 63, boasts an impressive record of 180 wins and 113 losses in the regular season, alongside a playoff record of 13-11 during his nearly two-decade stint with the Ravens. He led the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory in the 2012 season, marking his fifth year as head coach. His leadership style is often described as CEO-type, and how he fills key coaching roles will be essential for his success with the Giants.

Bringing Harbaugh onboard could come with a hefty price tag—reportedly as much as $20 million annually. The Giants seemed prepared for this financial commitment, knowing it would not hinder negotiations.

So, in short, the Giants are in the process of making a notable hire.
