Giants’ Defensive Coaching Changes Under New Head Coach

The Giants are making changes to their defensive coaching staff as they transition under new head coach John Harbaugh.

Sources indicate that several assistant coaches will not be retained, including Andre Patterson (defensive line), John Egorgwu (inside linebackers), Marquand Manuel (secondary coach and passing game coordinator), and Jeff Burris (cornerbacks).

Out of the defensive assistants that former head coach Brian Daboll put together last season, it seems that only Charlie Bullen, who was elevated to interim defensive coordinator in the final five games, has a chance to remain. Bullen shares a strong rapport with general manager Joe Schoen, dating back to their time together in the Dolphins organization.

Harbaugh started meeting with existing contractual assistants on Wednesday, although it appears that some of the dismissed coaches were not given an opportunity to discuss their futures. Reports suggest Schoen informed certain staff members that they would not be part of Harbaugh’s plans and encouraged them to look for new opportunities without a personal meeting.

Harbaugh expressed optimism, saying, “I think we have a great coach on this staff, and I’m looking forward to talking to him.”

The recent moves aren’t particularly surprising, particularly since Harbaugh is the sole coach listed on the Giants’ official website.

As for the offensive staff’s future, it remains unclear. However, Carmen Bricillo is seen as a strong candidate to take over coaching the offensive line, especially with backing from John’s father, former coach Jack Harbaugh.

Reports suggest that the Ravens are unlikely to impede their offensive assistants from seeking positions with Harbaugh or making lateral moves.

Patterson brings a wealth of experience as he has been an NFL assistant for 24 years. He previously served as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator, notably helping Dexter Lawrence transition to a three-time Pro Bowl nose tackle. Both he and Egorgwu were part of Daboll’s initial staff in 2022.

Egorgwu has past ties with Harbaugh as a former Ravens assistant (2015-16), which led to speculation about his chances of staying on.

Meanwhile, Manuel, who was the Falcons’ defensive coordinator, and Burris joined the staff last season.

Harbaugh has various options to consider for the defensive coordinator role, including former Ravens position coaches who have advanced to defensive coordinator positions such as Zach Orr (Ravens), Denard Wilson (Titans), and Anthony Weaver (Dolphins).

Additionally, Jim Leonhardt, currently an assistant head coach with the Broncos and a former player under Harbaugh, is regarded as a prime candidate for the defensive coordinator positions with both the Giants and Jets.
