John Harbaugh Sets Ambitious Goals for Giants
John Harbaugh has set his sights high in his inaugural season as the head coach for the New York Giants. Officially signing a five-year contract valued at around $100 million on Saturday, he shared his aspirations with Ian O’Connor from The Athletic.
“I really think the Giants have a solid roster, and it’s our responsibility to enhance that,” Harbaugh remarked. “We’re aiming to compete for the playoffs and possibly a championship. We’re optimistic about making it to the playoffs next year,” he added.
To achieve this, Harbaugh will be counting on significant development from quarterback Jackson Dart. He mentioned he’s had extensive discussions with Dart, perhaps two or three times, which suggests he’s keen on building a rapport.
Having coached Lamar Jackson in Baltimore for the last eight seasons, Harbaugh expressed strong admiration for Dart, saying, “I couldn’t be more impressed with him.” He observed Dart’s performance on tape and noted, “He had an excellent rookie season and possesses the right mindset. He’s definitely a tough guy.”
Making the playoffs would represent a major turnaround for the Giants, who wound up with a disappointing 4-13 record—just one win more than the bottom four teams in the league.
Harbaugh expressed a mix of excitement and responsibility, stating, “There’s so much pride in being part of the New York Football Giants. That’s a fact.”
Since their Super Bowl win in 2011, the team has only reached the postseason twice. First, though, Harbaugh will need to finalize his coaching team.
Former Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who has worked alongside Harbaugh in Baltimore, is reportedly the leading candidate for a similar role in New York.
Next, the focus will shift towards free agency and the draft, where Harbaugh will collaborate closely with Giants general manager Joe Schoen. However, it’s noteworthy that he will be reporting directly to co-owner John Mara.
Reflecting on their past together, Harbaugh shared, “We had some amazing football stories and equally inspiring life stories. He’s a diligent worker, and we’re all set to get to work.”
