John Harbaugh Shares Life Lessons at Miami University Graduation
John Harbaugh, head coach of the Giants, recently addressed a group of graduates at his alma mater, Miami University in Ohio. He spoke candidly about the challenges many new graduates might face in their careers.
“There will be tough times,” he said during the speech. “You might receive a call with disappointing news—maybe they’re letting you go. It happens. When it does, I hope you can find the resilience to bounce back. Remember, cherish the good in your life, the people who support you, and keep an eye out for the great opportunities that lie ahead.” Harbaugh, who had been let go from his position after 18 seasons with the Ravens, is optimistic about his new role with the Giants, as several NFL teams were eager to hire the well-regarded coach.
This marked a first for Harbaugh, having never been fired throughout his coaching career that started in the early ’80s.
Reflecting on his journey, he noted, “Experience shows that life moves forward but is best learned by looking back. Things rarely unfold as we planned. Sometimes, though, they turn out even better than expected—so much so that it’s hard to believe it.” He added a hopeful twist, comparing the success in life to rain, suggesting that when it flows, it can fill your cup to overflowing.
In his address, Harbaugh emphasized compassion and encouragement as transformative forces. He opened with a question often asked in his family: “Who is better than us?”
Miami-Ohio State President Gregory P. Crawford urged the crowd to support the Giants that day, igniting a chant of “Go Giants!”
During the event, Harbaugh received an honorary doctorate on the same field where he played. Some of his old friends from the Class of ’84 joined him in the celebration.
Harbaugh expressed, “Toughness is a talent; it’s a choice. When you choose to be tough, remember that the naysayers have no authority over you. You can’t lose if you control your choices. Yes, we can’t control everything, but in truth, you can have a significant influence on many aspects of your life. The only thing beyond our control? The outcomes of games.”
