Giants Consider Chargers’ Shane Day for Offensive Coordinator Role

Jesse Minter and Mike McDonald had success transitioning between the Harbaugh brothers—maybe Shane Day is in for something similar.

The New York Giants are set to interview Day, currently the quarterbacks coach for the Chargers, this Saturday as they seek a new offensive coordinator, as noted in a report.

Meanwhile, Coach Jim Harbaugh with the Chargers recently brought in Mike McDaniel to succeed the dismissed Greg Roman as offensive coordinator.

It’s still uncertain if Day will stay with McDaniel, who has guided Pro Bowl quarterback Justin Herbert across four of the past five seasons since 2021.

Day and McDaniel previously collaborated on the 49ers’ coaching staff from 2019 to 2020.

This week has seen renewed interest in the Harbaugh coaching network; the Ravens appointed Jim Harbaugh as their new head coach, following Minter’s work with the Minter brothers. Plus, McDonald’s Seattle Seahawks made it to the Super Bowl, bolstering the legacy.

The Giants are also interviewing Alex Tunney, the Colts’ passing game coordinator, for their offensive coordinator position on Friday, and have requested to meet with Davis Webb, the Broncos’ quarterbacks coach.

Tunney and Webb were teammates with the Giants in 2018, where Tunney made the roster and eventually became the team leader in completion percentage.

Additionally, the Giants have put in a request to interview Jim Bob Cooter, current Colts offensive coordinator and former Jets running backs coach.

On another note, ESPN has mentioned that LSU’s offensive coordinator, Charlie Weis Jr., is likely to stay in college football, despite the support he receives from quarterback Jackson Dart.

Weis Jr. is the son of a Giants assistant coach who won a Super Bowl in the ’90s.

In related news, the Giants are preparing to hire Donald D’Alesio as their new defensive backs coach, according to reports. D’Alesio has served as a safeties coach for the Chiefs for three seasons and was with the Ravens last year.

Prior to that, he worked as a defensive analyst at LSU in 2020.

He’ll soon meet Giants cornerback Cordale Flotte, who is entering free agency after a standout season.

“He’s a fantastic young coach,” a superior of D’Alesio remarked to the Post.
