Red Sox owner John Henry spoke about the current state of the franchise in a rare interview.
And he wasn’t thrilled with the fans’ continued World Series aspirations.
The founder of Fenway Sports Group rarely speaks to the Boston media. He spoke a bit about his thoughts to the Financial Times this week..
In an email, Henry told the outlet that he believes it is unrealistic for Red Sox fans to expect the team to compete for a World Series title every year.
“Fans expect us to win almost every year so it’s easy to get frustrated and they refuse to believe the actual odds are one in 20 or one in 30,” he told the Financial Times.
The Red Sox were 32-31 going into Friday’s game and 1.5 games out of the third wild-card spot in the AL, but Henry and Boston brass have come under fire for years.
The Red Sox have not reached the postseason since 2021, their only appearance since winning the 2018 World Series.

The team then shed salary and sold players like Mookie Betts, whom they traded to the Dodgers after the 2019 season.
Henry insists he is committed to building Boston back up as a winning team again.
“My wife and I live and work in Boston,” Henry added, “and we are committed to this city, to this region, so the Red Sox are not for sale. We do not typically sell assets.”
“I don’t think someone in my position can win in public. What I say is often used against me, so it’s best not to say what I normally think.”
