Recent Assassination Attempt at Washington Hilton
John Hinckley Jr. described the recent assassination attempt on Donald Trump as “creepy” while reflecting on the shooting at the Washington, D.C. hotel where President Reagan was attacked decades earlier, as reported.
The plot against Trump came to light during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, held at the Washington Hilton.
Authorities identified the suspect as 32-year-old Cole Allen from Torrance, California. Reports indicate he entered the venue and fired shots before being taken into custody. A Secret Service officer sustained injuries during the incident.
The First Lady and Cabinet members were swiftly evacuated from the hotel by Secret Service personnel, while members of the press scrambled for safety.
Cole Allen Faces Charges Following the Incident
In his first court appearance, Allen was charged with attempted assassination of Trump after the shooting at the WHCA dinner.
In a conversation with the media outlet TMZ, Hinckley Jr. mentioned that it felt “eerie” to learn about the shooting happening in the same hotel where he had once committed his own crime. He received updates through news alerts on his phone and turned on the television to follow the unfolding events.
Hinckley criticized the security at the Washington Hilton, claiming it is “too lax” and asserting that large events should not be held there anymore. It’s worth noting that this is the same hotel where he attempted to assassinate President Reagan in 1981.
Hinckley’s past obsession with actress Jodie Foster led him to write a letter to her about his intentions regarding Reagan.
This previous assassination attempt did not succeed, and in 1982, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity. The court mandated that he be held in a psychiatric facility until he was released in 2022.
