Actor John Lithgow has expressed that he believes many of J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender issues are “distorted and misrepresented,” even as he admits he disagrees with “many” of her statements. In a conversation with journalist David Remnick, Lithgow commented that some of her remarks seem to be exaggerated for her own purposes.
The 80-year-old actor, who is set to portray Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series, acknowledged that he was aware of the controversy surrounding Rowling prior to joining the project. In fact, he received pressure to withdraw from it.
Lithgow mentioned that he felt a stronger reason to stay committed than simply opposing Rowling’s perspectives. When pressed about Rowling’s rhetoric, Remnick noted the unexpected hostility and intensity of her public comments, to which Lithgow responded that he too finds it disheartening.
Rowling, famed for writing the Harry Potter series, has faced backlash from transgender activists due to her vocal opposition to various aspects of transgender ideology, including the support of women-only spaces.
In past remarks, Lithgow has shared that he contemplated stepping down from his role because of Rowling’s views, but ultimately chose not to. His consideration came after non-binary actor Orde Mason-Hyde, who works on another project with him, expressed feeling “embarrassed” and “somehow hurt” about participating in the Potter show. Lithgow noted he decided to proceed despite the potential consequences.
He reflected that this topic would likely come up in interviews for years to come.
