Brandon Aiyuk’s Time in the Bay Area Seems to Be Ending
Brandon Aiyuk’s stint with the 49ers is likely coming to an end. During a recent end-of-season press conference, general manager John Lynch reflected on the star wide receiver’s tenure with the team, indicating this season has been quite a ride for the 27-year-old.
“It seems safe to say he’s played his last game as a 49er,” Lynch stated. “It’s unfortunate. Things just—I don’t know, sometimes they don’t pan out.”
Aiyuk, who was a first-round pick back in 2020, made a significant impact early in his career. He racked up 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023. Yet, his performance waned in subsequent years.
Just over a year after signing a substantial four-year, $120 million contract extension, the 49ers decided to void the guarantee for 2026. This move came after concerns regarding Aiyuk’s communication with the team and his absence from meetings and rehab sessions.
The relationship between Aiyuk and the 49ers had become strained prior to the extension. There were even moments during the 2024 offseason when he sought a trade, but the hefty contract seemed to squash those rumors.
Since his right knee surgery midway through the 2024 season, Aiyuk hasn’t played and was placed on the reserve/left team list in mid-December, ruling him out for the rest of the season.
Shortly after the conclusion of the 49ers’ season, Aiyuk stirred some controversy by posting a video on YouTube where he was seen driving over 100 mph near Levi’s Stadium.
He later expressed regret about the incident, apologizing in a follow-up post on his channel. “I’m sorry,” he said. “Speeding is no longer part of what I do! I was praying with my son tonight, and I hope others take the chance to do the same with their loved ones!”
Despite Aiyuk’s absence, the 49ers finished the regular season at 12-5 and made it to the divisional round, only to be ousted by their NFC West rivals, the Seahawks.
