John MacArthur’s Last Thoughts on Legacy, Faithfulness, and Grace Church’s Future

John MacArthur’s Legacy and Reflections on Leadership

Phil Johnson, the Executive Director at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, recently shared a touching conversation that took place within the church. This past week, during a Q&A session, a member of the congregation posed a question to John MacArthur, who passed away on Monday at 86 years old.

Someone in the crowd remarked, “I know that Grace is a kind of church today because of your merciless, healthy love for doctrine. However, do you wonder what will happen to Grace when you’re gone?”

The speaker went on to emphasize MacArthur’s unique passion for doctrine and truth. In reply, MacArthur referenced a line by hymn writer Charles Wesley: “The Lord will fill his workers, but his work will continue.” He illustrated his own departure from this world, likening it to removing a hand from a bucket of water, asserting, “There is no hole; it is filled.”

“God has his people every year at all ages,” MacArthur noted. “I am not essential. I am just a servant when the Lord gave me.”

MacArthur, who dedicated over 56 years of his life at Grace, mentioned that he’s been asked about succession planning often. He acknowledged the repeated inquiries regarding future leadership. While he did admit he was meant to retire, MacArthur expressed his feelings about continuing his work, saying, “As long as I’m working, I can’t imagine it.”

“I’m glad that the Lord has allowed me to function at this point,” he added. “Faithfulness is its own reward.”

He also reflected on how his understanding had deepened over the years as he preached, mentioning that wisdom seemed to accumulate. “There’s a sense that you’ve had more than ever, and there’s more to offer,” he shared about his preaching journey.

“No matter what happens to me, this church has so many wonderful, talented, dedicated, extremely motivated, passionate preachers coming behind me,” he reassured. “There will be a lot of them in my place.”

MacArthur’s teachings date back to 1969, and a wealth of his sermons can be found in various archives. He was a significant figure, noted for his ability to connect biblical teachings with practical life lessons. In May 2011, he completed preaching through the entire New Testament and was known for his thorough studies and explanations of scripture.

“Even after I die, the lessons and teachings will carry on,” he said, leaving a lasting impact on his followers.
