John Morton speaks on Jameson Williams' role with the Lions

Lions’ Coordinator Acknowledges Need for More Targets for Williams

John Morton, the offensive coordinator for the Lions, has expressed a desire to get the ball to Jameson Williams more often, admitting he hasn’t succeeded in this aspect.

This season, at age 24, Williams has received only 30 targets. So far, he’s managed to score two touchdowns and accumulate 289 yards across seven games.

“I’ve thought about all of this,” Morton said. “I need to improve on it. But there were also times when we just didn’t make it happen.” He reassured, “It’s not like we’ve ignored him completely.”

Morton, reflecting on the situation, acknowledged to Williams that he feels like he hasn’t fulfilled that responsibility. “I’ve got to do better,” he continued, noting that it’s a collaborative effort. “We definitely thought about targeting him more.”

During the Lions’ bye week, both Morton and Williams took some time to discuss strategies to get the wide receiver more involved in their dynamic offense.

“He spoke to me about his feelings, but honestly, I didn’t dwell on it too much,” Williams shared. “We’re winning, and that’s what matters. I mean, I know I’ll get my opportunities eventually. It’s a long season.”

The coaching team is also focused on creating more chances for Williams, especially during crucial third downs, even as he faces double coverage since Amon-Ra St. Brown is a primary target.

Williams, however, hasn’t made a big deal out of his reduced touches, emphasizing that the team’s success is his priority.

“I trust that my time will come,” he remarked. “I know it’s just around the corner, so I stay prepared.”

Morton mentioned plans to enhance the connection between Williams and quarterback Jared Goff, also hinting at more creativity in play-calling.

Despite the challenges, Morton noted he appreciates how Williams copes with the situation. “He doesn’t complain; he just plays,” he said. “If he gets frustrated with me, I can understand. I’ve been in that position before, and I get it.”

“We all need to step up, focus on our techniques, and support each other,” he added.

The Lions picked Williams with the 12th overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. Last season, he had a standout performance, recording 1,001 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, which were both career highs.
