Emotional Match at the US Open
John Mulaney and Olivia Munn found themselves intensely watching as American Coco Gauff narrowly defeated Australia’s Ajla Tomljanović during their opening match at the US Open on Tuesday night.
The couple, married in New York last July, showed a range of anxious expressions while taking in the match, as captured in various social media clips.
At one moment, Mulaney leaned forward, fist clenched near his face, visibly invested in the action.
He humorously remarked, “His blood pressure has risen. One person.”
Another comment captured the intensity: “[He’s] Live every point.”
Gauff, who is ranked third, fought through three grueling sets that lasted nearly three hours at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
After splitting from her coach, Matt Daly, Gauff brought on biomechanics expert Gavin McMillan right before the tournament began.
Once known for her struggles with serves, Gauff is still under the guidance of her longtime manager, John Christophe Faurel.
In a post-match interview, she reflected, “Yeah, that was a tough game. I had a chance to win in straight sets. Ajla was tough. It wasn’t perfect, but I’m glad to move on to the next round. I’m trying to improve from my last match.”
Previously, Gauff had a difficult outing against Italian Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinals at the Cincinnati Open, where she recorded 62 unforced errors.
Next up, she will face Donna Vekić in the second round of the US Open on Thursday.
