John Oliver Critiques Disney CEO Bob Iger Over Kimmel’s Suspension
Comedian John Oliver has taken aim at Disney’s CEO Bob Iger regarding the recent suspension of Jimmy Kimmel. This move followed pressure from the FCC.
On his HBO show “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver called on Iger to confront the Trump administration, warning about the potential tarnishing of Disney’s legacy. He noted, “History certainly remembers those who hesitated, often driven by money or comfort.”
“You have to draw a line somewhere. So, why not here?” he argued, pushing for resistance against unreasonable demands.
Oliver’s comments were prompted by ABC’s decision to suspend Kimmel indefinitely. The network acted after Kimmel was accused of politicizing the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Just hours before the suspension was announced, ABC executive Brendan Kerr indicated there was a “strong case” for the FCC to intervene against ABC and its parent company, Disney.
Kerr suggested on a podcast with right-wing commentator Benny Johnson that they could handle the situation either straightforwardly or more complicatingly.
In his critique, Oliver likened Kerr’s threats to those of a mob boss, a comparison echoed by Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas. He stated, “As the pressure mounts, it’s evident. Someone silences you, and there are escalating consequences.”
Oliver also condemned Nexstar and Sinclair, two primary owners of ABC affiliates, saying, “Kerr’s directives led Nexstar to push Kimmel out.”
Interestingly, Kerr responded to media inquiries about Kimmel’s suspension with humorous GIFs, showcasing a tone of casual disregard.
Oliver further emphasized that it appears the government is pressuring businesses to restrict free speech, remarking, “And Trump isn’t even trying to hide it.”
After Kimmel’s suspension, Trump expressed his approval, suggesting the government could revoke the broadcasting licenses of networks he deems unfavorable.
Kimmel, during his opening monologue the next day, lamented the attempts by certain groups to spin political narratives surrounding Kirk’s actions.
Meanwhile, Kerr denied any connection between his demand for action against Kimmel and the comedian’s political stance, asserting that networks have a duty to inform the public, which he claimed Kimmel failed to do, allegedly misleading viewers.
In the aftermath, court documents revealed that the mother of the alleged murderer remarked on her son’s political shift toward leftist beliefs.
