John Oliver criticizes Disney's Bob Iger for the removal of Jimmy Kimmel

John Oliver, the late-night comic, has criticized Disney CEO Bob Iger for suspending Jimmy Kimmel following pressure from the FCC.

On his HBO show “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver encouraged Iger to resist the Trump administration, suggesting that past Disney leaders would be remembered for their cowardice when faced with difficult decisions.

“There will always be those who are remembered for indecision, allowing money and comfort to dictate their choices,” he remarked.

He pressed Iger to take a stand, saying, “At some point, you have to draw a line. Let’s make it here, why not?”

Oliver pointed out that when faced with unreasonable demands, Iger should opt for battles he could win legally instead of backing down. He advised considering some essential yet unorthodox principles that aren’t typically taught in business education.

This debate arose after ABC announced Kimmel’s “indefinite” suspension, which stemmed from Kimmel’s comments regarding the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

Just hours before the suspension was revealed, Kerr had indicated that there was substantial justification for the FCC to intervene regarding ABC and Disney.

“We can handle this easily or make it complicated,” Kerr stated during a podcast appearance with a right-wing commentator.

Oliver likened the remarks from the FCC chairman to mafia-style intimidation, echoing sentiments previously expressed by Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz.

He illustrated this by stating that continued threats lead to actual harm over time.

In his critique, Oliver condemned Nexstar and Sinclair, the primary stakeholders of the ABC affiliate.

Oliver shared that Kerr had ultimately pushed for Kimmel’s removal, indicating a lack of clarity in the preceding events.

Kerr responded to media inquiries about the suspension of Kimmel with light-hearted GIFs, indicating a dismissive attitude.

This situation appears to many as a clear example of governmental pressure on businesses to suppress free speech, a notion Oliver believes is glaringly evident.

Following Kimmel’s suspension, Trump voiced his approval, suggesting that the government could revoke broadcasting licenses for networks he perceives as critical of him.

Kimmel, in his show’s opening remarks the following Monday, addressed what he saw as a “new low” in the attempts to politicize tragic events.

On Thursday, Kerr denied that his actions against ABC were motivated by any bias against Kimmel’s political views, claiming that major networks have a responsibility to serve public interest, which he felt Kimmel failed to do.

Moreover, court documents revealed that the mother of the accused murderer alleged her son had increasingly adopted political views that leaned to the left.
