It might be a good idea to start. I doubt Fox Sports executives will show up. they never do.
They never responded to my invitation to sit and watch national baseball broadcasts on Fox and explain what they were thinking in the name of Abner Doubleday, and worse, why did they do it? Do you keep thinking?
Why would they let John Smoltz, America’s chief MLB analyst, suffer for three hours every year — now 10 years — to a declining audience? Would the statement “We unwisely aided and abetted the destruction of baseball on television” look good on their resumes?
Do they really think American baseball fans enjoy him, are they just drawn to his gruesome, humorless, monotonous, verbose, and often contradictory chatter? Are you looking forward to his 3-hour pitching lecture late Saturday afternoon?
If so, they’re in the wrong job. Or, like many former baseball fans, does Fox’s shotcaller just not bother watching anymore?
On Saturday, we randomly selected Smoltz’s filibuster in the top of the fourth inning during the Cardinals-Mets game, when the Cards were leading 5-0. The following is a warning: This is not an easy journey, so vaya con Dios. Here it is:
“All pitchers in the major leagues try to create an advantage by having something that puts the batter in an advantageous position (whether it’s an object or a certain area of the at-bat that they control), and right now… is” [Mets starter Adrian Houser] Downs wasn’t consistent enough and wasn’t consistent enough in some areas of the plate either, but Cardinal hitters were more comfortable than not. ”
Pete Alonso then caught a foul fly, but Smoltz wanted to hear more and didn’t stop.
“In other words, let’s say you come out on the road and dominate away, away, away and your opponent looks at you like that. Now it’s okay to make mistakes and make more mistakes. But if you’re not in one area or if you catch too many at-bats without hitting 98 mph, the batter has an advantage on that pitch.
“And early in this game, that was the difference. He pitches well until strike one, but then he has a hard time getting back to that spot, and he keeps doing that and putting pressure on the batter.”
Smoltz isn’t finished yet–almost isn’t finished! There was still half a game left.
But considering that some people might have gone to the game to watch it, or even to have fun, the game became impossible by design. Ten years of self-destruction of the live sports facilities that Fox will soon pay $730 million a year to maintain.
And that doesn’t include combat pay for the poor souls assigned to Smoltz’s subtitles. People around the office call him “Jitter.”
Greed trumps horse safety in the Derby.
20 horses are once again scheduled for Saturday’s Derby, dispelling the annual fear that 20 is too many for the safety of horses and humans, or at least six too many, and therefore doom awaits. I can’t.
The number of runners in the Derby decreases every year due to ego-driven horse owners thinking, “I have a horse that will run in the Derby,” and the desire to be seen as special among the special horses at Churchill Downs. The upper limit is reached.
Meanwhile, the gates are currently scheduled to open to 20 young horses, all of whom have little experience of racing or even racing, and most of the runners will be heading to the same place: the rails.
NBA in-game analyst Richard Jefferson often gets swallowed up by his own long-winded nonsense, but Jalen Brunson might as well. Thank you for teaching me the value of keeping it short and simple.
After Brunson scored with an extraordinary one-handed floater in traffic, Jefferson nailed it, saying, “I don’t know how you keep that out.”
Reminds me of Doc Emrick During a rare break during a frenetic Game 7 between the Lightning and the Bruins in the 2011 conference finals, he famously surrendered, saying, “I don’t have anything sensible to add.”
Do you like statistics? Through the end of April, only seven times in MLB history have a batter had 44 or more strikeouts. Four of those were this season.
Phils’ Kyle Schwarber, Reds’ Will Benson, Bucks’ O’Neal Cruz, Dodgers’ Teoscar Hernandez It did the trick this season.
Joey Gallo, now with the Nats, finished with just one back. However, Gallo had 43 strikeouts in just 74 at-bats, a rate of 58 percent.
As for Rob Manfred’s all-in DH, what changes were supposed to take MLB’s offense to greater heights?
Now, Sunday’s five games included DHs batting .188 or lower. 12 players including DH with a batting average of .216 or less.
I was born and raised a basketball fan. So when the first quarter of Game 4 between the Celtics and the Heat ended with 19 3-pointers made, I did what I was implicitly encouraged to do. I turned it off.
The Draft Ridiculed: Why Most Local Football Fans Knew Overweight and Uninspired OL Mekhi Becton, the Jets’ 2020 first-round draft pick who is currently going to the Eagles, was a wasted pick from Day. Is it too much to ask for an explanation?1 Did the Jets know nothing?
As University of Michigan basketball has declined over the years, Juwan Howard has seemingly failed to do enough as the University of Michigan’s head coach to cause or exacerbate problems on and off the court. So it’s not really a surprise that the Nets hired Howard as an assistant coach.
