Tim Cook Steps Down as Apple CEO, John Ternus Takes Over
Tim Cook has announced his resignation, paving the way for John Ternus to become the new CEO of Apple. Cook expressed confidence that the transition would be “perfectly smooth.”
Ternus officially began his role on Tuesday. He takes charge as Apple continues to navigate the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence (AI), following Cook’s impressive 15-year leadership during which the company’s value soared to an astounding $4.6 trillion.
At 51, Ternus has a long history with Apple, having joined the product design team in 2001. He took over iPhone hardware in 2020, became senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021, and oversaw Apple Watch hardware starting in 2022.
In January, he began managing the industrial design team. Recently, Ternus has been assembling his own executive team, blending long-standing Apple employees with fresh talent.
His contributions to notable Apple products, such as the iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro, are well recognized.
The increasing importance of AI poses a significant challenge for Ternus, regarded as a transformative shift in technology since the launch of the first iPhone in 2007. Notably, Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, in July, alleging trade secret theft and highlighting that over 400 former Apple employees are now at OpenAI.
“Apple is going to have to face this idea of ‘What’s next?’” noted Michael Gartenberg, a consumer technology analyst and former Apple marketer. He emphasized that Ternus needs to ensure Apple retains its status as a desirable brand, expressing the importance of continuing innovation even as a multitrillion-dollar enterprise.
Ternus is set to take center stage at the upcoming iPhone launch event at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino later this month.
At 65, Cook appears to be aligned with Ternus on the transition.
Cook stated, “We really set this bar for the transition to be the best ever,” during an interview at the premiere of “Ted Lasso.” Both he and Ternus were spotted wearing similar outfits. “We want it to be a textbook example, and that is exactly how it’s going. I feel so great about how it’s going.”
Although Ternus is the third CEO following Steve Jobs, he is the eighth in Apple’s history since its founding in 1977. The first chief executive was Michael Scott.
Cook maintained a working relationship with former President Donald Trump, despite some policy disagreements, notably regarding tariffs on Chinese imports.
After Cook revealed his plans to step down in April, Trump praised him on social media.
Trump remarked, “Tim Cook had an AMAZING career, almost incomparable,” expressing that he has always been a fan of Cook.
